The New York Knicks head into the 2024 NBA Draft with the 24th and 25th overall selections. What they do with those picks is anyone’s guess, though it seems very likely that New York uses at least one of them in a trade.

Knicks president Leon Rose has made trades on each of his drafts during his tenure except for 2023 when New York didn’t have a pick. He shuffled around spots at the end of the 2020 first round before ending up with Immanuel Quickley (while staying at the eighth overall pick and drafting Obi Toppin), flipped picks around in the 2021 draft that netted them Quentin Grimes and Miles McBride and made a bunch of head-spinning trades in 2022 that gave New York future draft capital. The guy likes to get busy on draft night.

Now, the Knicks have a deep roster with most of its key players under contract and three pretty good draft picks. In ESPN's latest mock draft by Jonatan Givony and Jeremy Woo, the Knicks draft Duke's Kyle Filipowski at 24 and Virginia's Ryan Dunn at 25. But both of the draft gurus mention that the league-wide expectations are that New York trades one of their picks.

Givony writes the following: “Most teams don't expect the Knicks to keep both of their first-round picks, meaning this selection might very well end up in another team's hands. Trading one of their two picks for a future first-rounder would likely help for trade flexibility down the road, but it remains to be seen what the market will look like on draft night, as picks in the early second round are being viewed as valuable ones due to the salary cap and luxury tax flexibility they offer.”

Knicks own three picks in top 40 of 2024 NBA Draft

Since the Knicks have Isaiah Hartenstein and OG Anunoby hitting free agency, the Knicks may be inclined to use at least one of those picks to find a player who could step into the rotation if one or both of them sign elsewhere. Filipowski and Dunn could each be those guys, though the former's weakness as an interior defender and the latter's limited upside on offense means that they will have a lot to develop.

It’s tough to see what types of trades the Knicks can make in this draft. Trading up could be worth it if New York really likes a certain prospect but the caliber of prospects available at their range is roughly the same. They could pair one or both of those picks with the contract of Mitchell Robinson or Bojan Bogdanovic to make an upgrade without sacrificing too much cap space. New York has a lot of optionality but their various routes may not be made clear until the night of the draft.

The Knicks also have the 38th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, giving them a good second-rounder to add another young player or trade away. Although the Hartenstein and Anunoby decisions are the most important parts of New York's offseason, the draft can help them become an even better team.
