The Dallas Mavericks are rumored to be interested in trading Tim Hardaway Jr. A suitor has emerged, as NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Detroit Pistons are considered a “potential trade destination” for the veteran guard.

Details of discussions about the trade are mostly unknown at the moment. But Pistons guard Quentin Grimes has reportedly been involved in talks, according to Stein.

“A full potential trade construction has not yet emerged, but league sources say there have been scenarios discussed in which Quentin Grimes would land in Dallas,” Stein wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Trading Hardaway would save the Mavs money while potentially filling a roster need. Hardaway enjoyed some memorable moments with Dallas but fell out of the rotation in the postseason. The 32-year-old veteran still has a lot to offer but will likely benefit from a fresh start.

Hardaway has played in Dallas since the 2018-19 season. He has provided offensive production for the team, but it has often been fairly inconsistent.

In 2023-24, Hardaway averaged 14.4 points per outing on 40.2 percent field goal and 35.3 percent three-point shooting. He recorded 26.8 minutes per contest across 79 games played. As aforementioned, though, he began to lose minutes in the playoffs.

Hardaway is more than capable of heating up quickly and making a massive scoring impact. When he does not have his shot, however, Hardaway does not provide much other production. Nevertheless, teams seemingly have interest in acquiring him.

At the moment, the Pistons are linked to Hardaway. Perhaps another suitor will emerge. If not, the Mavs will try to work out a deal with the Pistons.

Mavericks' offseason

The Mavs are currently focused on preparing for the NBA Draft. Dallas is looking for a diamond in the rough with the No. 58 overall pick.

The team has also been linked to a number of NBA players in rumors. Of course, this is not surprising given how many rumors surface throughout the offseason. With NBA free agency just around the corner and trade talks beginning to heat up, the Mavericks could make multiple impactful moves.

Dallas is fresh off an NBA Finals appearance. They silenced critics throughout the year but fell short against the Boston Celtics in the Finals. Regardless, this Mavs team certainly features a bright future. A strong offseason will go a long way towards giving the Mavericks a legitimate opportunity to compete once again in 2024-25.

Mavs president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison is also hopeful that everyone comes back “10-15 percent better” next season.

“We’re proud of the way the season went,” Harrison told reporters during his end of season press conference last Friday. “We're committed to building a winning organization that has championship aspirations. I'm proud of the coaches, the staff, the players… Some of the things I talked to them the staff as well as the players and coaches, really want everybody to come back 10-15 percent better mind, body, spirit. I think if we do that we are going to be proud of the results.”
