After narrowly missing the playoffs last season, the Dallas Mavericks are gearing up and retooling this summer with the hopes of returning to the postseason. After re-signing Kyrie Irving and trading for Grant Williams, the Mavs have their eyes set on adding guard depth and are interested in Minnesota Timberwolves' Jaylen Nowell, according to Darren Wolfson.

Nowell is not expected to return to the Timberwolves next season and the team is open to exploring sign and trade options to help him find a new team. The Mavs could swoop in for Nowell and use him as a backup behind Irving and Luka Doncic.

Drafted by the Timberwolves in the second round of the 2019 draft, Nowell was a key bench piece for Minnesota averaging 17 minutes per game during his four seasons. Last season he saw the most games and minutes of his career with a career-high 10.8 points per game to boot. However, Nowell's shooting numbers dropped significantly with the increased playing time.

Finding a balance will make Nowell a very valuable player for any team. He's a decent three-point shooter and has shown the ability to be a solid offensive contributor.

The Mavs have some work to do in order to make room for Nowell on the roster, but it is doable. Along with Irving and Williams, Dallas signed free agent Seth Curry and re-signed Dwight Powell this offseason. Adding Jaylen Nowell wouldn’t exactly catapult the Mavs into contending status, but it would give Dallas a solid piece and another reliable player off the bench.
