The Los Angeles Lakers had been ramping up their pursuit of Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry ahead of the NBA trade deadline. But talks might be reaching an impasse.

Multiple executives told Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times they would not be willing to include Talen Horton-Tucker in a potential Lowry deal at the NBA trade deadline. Turner added the Lakers are “hesitant” to move THT:

“In talking to now three NBA front office executives, all of them said a resounding “No” about the Lakers including THT in any potential trade for Kyle Lowry,” Turner said during the L.A. Times NBA Trade Deadline Live Chat. “THT is liked that much by scouts. And the Lakers love his potential and upside. Yes, the Raptors would want a young talent like Horton-Tucker and yes the Lakers are hesitant. Dan, remember what people told you about THT in the bubble? Since this is a family chat, you can't use that language.”

Turner later told the chat he heard from a fourth executive saying they would not move THT.

It could prove difficult for the Lakers to include Horton-Tucker in a Lowry deal especially because they might also have to give up some combination of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell to make the salaries work.

Talen Horton-Tucker exploded onto the scene during the season. He has been an intriguing bench piece for the Lakers, especially as a big and physical guard who can lock up multiple positions and use his length to be a defensive playmaker. Horton-Tucker can also get to the cup and finish through contact.

The biggest hang-up seems to stem from the fact THT is only 20, whereas Kyle Lowry is 35 and on an expiring contract. These are the decisions that make the NBA trade deadline so intriguing, especially for a Lakers team hoping to repeat.
