Dwight Howard is set to join his 3rd team in four years after agreeing to join his hometown team, the Atlanta Hawks, and signing a three-year deal.
During his time with the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets, a lot of drama was reported and his discontent with his previous teams was highly publicized. There were a lot of reports also that he was not getting along well with Kobe Bryant and James Harden. Howard says things will be different this time around and that he's in a better place, both mentally and physically, than he's been at various points in the last few years.
He told Steve Hummer of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, during an interview that:
“All the things that happened the past couple of years really just made me stronger, made me have some thicker skin,”
And when asked about his back issues in the past, which started after undergoing back surgery in 2012, Howard said that those are all behind (no pun intended) him for good.
“My back hasn't been an issue, and I don't think I'll ever have an issue out of my back for the rest of my career,”
Now that he's playing for his home team, he is very driven to compete for a championship and have a fresh start. He is also drawing motivation from comments saying that the Hawks have a lesser chance of winning now that Al Horford is gone.
“It angers me because it makes you feel like it's impossible,” he said. “But I know that if all of us are on the same page and I'm in the best shape and I'm dominating every night, we're going to have a great opportunity.”
It's now a matter of time if we'll see the Dwight Howard of old; the center that dominated his opponents in the paint and led his team to a finals appearance. The Hawks are certainly hoping to see him as well.
