The Atlanta Hawks are keeping a spot open for veteran swingman Vince Carter if he chooses to return to the team this upcoming 2019-20 season, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

The veteran plans to head into his 22nd NBA season after publicly saying he hopes to play at least one more campaign in the league, though he's closely examining the best situation for his future:

“Just waiting for the right opportunity, and nothing has changed as far as that goal, and that dream of mine is to still play,” Carter said. “It’s just a patient thing. I get it. I’m older. Teams are going younger. Hopefully, within the coming days, we’ll have something figured out.”

It seems Carter is hoping for more playing time to finish his career on a good note, rather than the heavy-line mentoring he has been doing for the past few years.

After three seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, the veteran was thrust into this veteran role with the Sacramento Kings, which ultimately saw him leave for the Hawks a year later after playing out his contract.

Carter would have a hard time finding around 20 minutes per game at the wing position on a roster that includes Kevin Huerter, De'Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish and Allen Crabbe.

The Hawks value Carter's presence in the locker room, as evidenced by a “Hell yes!” from John Collins when asked if he'd welcome the former Slam Dunk champion to the team. However, it seems Carter would only be willing to take this opportunity if no other team comes calling in search of his services.
