Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum banked the game-winning lay-up to beat the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday; however, he was surprised to be the one to deliver the buzzer-beater.

According to Tatum, everyone on the Celtics thought Marcus Smart was going to shoot the ball. The veteran guard fooled two defenders with a fake and was able to create an opening for a jumper. However, he instead passed it to a cutting Tatum, who then spun around Kyrie Irving for the tough finish.

“I think we all thought Marcus was gonna shoot it. But we made eye contact, he made a great pass and I just had to make a layup,” Tatum said on the final play, per NBA insider Keith Smith.

As for Marcus Smart, he admitted that he has always told his Celtics teammates to cut to the basket whenever he has the ball. However, it wasn't his plan to give it to Jayson Tatum, admitting that he was looking for Al Horford when he made eye contact to his All-Star teammate.

“When you think I don’t see you, that’s when I see you the most,” Smart shared, per Jay King of The Athletic.

Here's a look at the game-winner for the Celtics to take the 1-0 series lead over the Nets:

For what it's worth, Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green perfectly read the play. In his reaction after the Celtics' victory, he noted how Smart would have taken the shot in previous years. Nonetheless, now that he's embracing his point guard duties, the Celtics are becoming even more a problem.

“And there’s the difference in the Celtics team. Last year Marcus Smart would’ve taken that shot. Ime got him to buy in and be the Marcus smart everyone loved out of Ok State. BEAUTIFUL! Looking like a true PG again! That’s what made Him special!” Green explained on Twitter.

It was definitely a beautiful ending, and the Celtics couldn't wish for a better confidence booster than that.
