Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving is close to getting his 100 percent form back. According to basketball insider Jeff Goodman, Irving said that while he’s not yet healthy enough to participate in 5-on-5 activities on the court, he is on track to be fully ready once Boston’s training camp begins this September.
Kyrie Irving just told me he hasn’t played 5-on-5 full contact yet, but worked out this morning with his trainer and expects to be 100 percent for the start of training camp.

Irving failed to finish his first season with the Celtics, as he had to undergo a minor knee surgery to remove from his left knee a pair of screws which were placed there during a prior procedure to repair an injury he suffered during the 2015 NBA Finals. Irving played in just 60 games last season for the Celtics and missed the entire playoffs, though, even with him sidelined, Boston managed to come within a win away from reaching the 2018 NBA Finals.
For now, Kyrie Irving is cleared for 1-on-1 workouts. He was also seen conducting a mini-basketball tutorial on Thursday in Las Vegas during Team USA’s minicamp at the University of Las Vegas.
Boston is widely viewed as the team to beat in the East now that the conference has finally rid itself of LeBron James. Apart from Irving, the Celtics are also excited for the looming return of Gordon Hayward to action. Hayward, who suffered a gruesome leg injury right in his very first game for the Celtics last year, is even expected to be cleared for 5-on-5 drills than Irving. The 28-year-old swingman is pegged to be ready for such activities this coming July.
Last season, Irving led the Celtics in points and assists with 24.4 and 5.1 per game, respectively.
