Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart appeared on the ESPN program “The Jump” and gave his take on his team's busy offseason. Among the comments made by Smart, though, seems to be an indirect shot at Houston Rockets star James Harden.
Smart admitted that he is flopping on defense, but he thinks flopping on offense — which Harden seems to be fond of doing — is way worse.
“The difference between me is, I flop on defense, your favorite player flops on offense,” Smart said, via John Karalis of MassLive.com.
Smart, 25, has been the subject of criticism when it comes to “flopping” — the exaggerated victim-hood of aggression by opponents. The NBA began instituting escalating fines for multiple flopping incidents back in 2012.
Article Continues BelowSmart was hit with a $15,000 fine for arguing with officials in a matchup with Harden and the Houston Rockets back in March of this year. Smart likened Harden as the type of star player to get the benefit of the doubt and whistles from the officials.
Harden has largely avoided scrutiny from NBA officials for reacting over the top to either minimal contact or no contact at all. In his “your favorite player flops on offense,” Smart could be referencing Harden's exaggerated display in order to get a foul call and put his opponent into foul trouble.
Both Smart and Harden certainly flop, so it's up to the fans to decide which they like or don't like between the two players.
