The Brooklyn Nets remain optimistic that D'Angelo Russell will remain a Net in the next several years.
Ian Begley of SNY reported on Friday that the Nets will likely lose D'Angelo Russell if they eventually sign Kyrie Irving. The SNY sources also revealed that members of the Nets organization are aware of the strong possibility of losing Russell in the event they acquire Irving.
However, Anthony Puccio of Nets Daily also cited sources who said that the Nets are still “fluid and flexible” in terms of their free-agency plans. The sources also denied the reported communication about the ramification of signing Irving in free agency.
Irving recently opted out of the final year of his contract with the Boston Celtics to become a free agent this summer. The 27-year-old superstar also parted ways with his agent to move to Jay-Z's ROC Nation Sports. According to Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald, Irving is preparing to sign with the Nets this summer.
The Irving-to-Nets talks fueled debates on whether or not Irving an Russell can play together effectively as bother players need the ball on their hands a lot to become effective. However, there is also a growing belief that head coach Kenny Atkinson would eventually make the pairing work.
It also worth noting that Russell liked an Instagram post showing Russell and Irving jersey beside each other. It generated speculation that Russell is actually open to the idea of sharing the backcourt with the former NBA champion starting next season.
