Boston Celtics swingman Gordon Hayward is in the middle of what is a very long recovery process from a nasty leg injury he suffered right on the opening night of the NBA.
Perhaps to pass some time and vent his emotions caused by the injury, Hayward decided to detail what he went through in the moments that followed his scary fall in a lengthy post on Facebook. This also allowed him to let his fans know for certain what’s going through his mind during this difficult time not only in his basketball career but in his life as well.
According to Hayward, the play that led to his injury was something he’s done numerous times before, though he’s aware that it could sometimes lead to hard falls, his experience taught him.
“There’s been a lot of times when I’ve been knocked off balance in the air. There’s been times when I’ve had close calls, when I’ve come down pretty hard. And for the most part, I’ve always been fine. I just bounced right back up.”
Unfortunately for Gordon Hayward, the first time he tried that play in a Celtics uniform, it didn’t go as planned.

“Immediately, I knew something was off, but when I landed, it wasn’t a huge amount of pain. I rolled over and saw my foot, and it was pointed in completely the wrong direction. My first thought was, ‘Oh. This isn’t good. There’s something very wrong here.' I felt a sense of panic come over me and signaled to the ref, ‘Hey, look at this. You’ve got to stop the game.' And still, it didn’t seem like it was hurting that much.
Then all of a sudden, it came.
It was like once my brain figured out what had happened, I was hit with shots of pain. The training staff came running over to me super fast, but however long it was—three seconds, five seconds—I just remember sitting there, looking at my foot the wrong way, and it felt like an eternity. Dr. Rosneck, the Cavaliers doctor, braced me as he explained that they wanted to try and pop my ankle back into place. I held on, and the moment they did it, there was just a massive shot of pain, probably the most pain I’ve ever felt in my life.”
There are plenty of interesting tidbits on Gordon Hayward’s article, including the support he is getting from fans and, of course, from his family. The Celtics star also tells of his frustration of watching games at home, unable to play and most especially, help his teammates.
Gordon Hayward is done for the season and the soonest he can come back is next year. For now, his focus is mostly on a rehab that would lead him back to the floor.
