More details have surfaced from the murder of Dwyane Wade‘s cousin, Nykea Aldridge, who was killed in front of a school in the South Side of Chicago on Friday.
Darwin Sorrells Jr. and Derren Sorrells were charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Derren was “on his daily break from an electronic monitoring bracelet” at the time of the crime, Chicago Police said Sunday.
Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said in a news conference that Derren's ankle monitor was not active when the woman was shot and killed while pushing her baby's stroller.
The two brothers were known gang members and repeat offenders, said Johnson.

Darwin had been out on parole since February and was a “career gun offender.” Derren had six prior felony arrests, his ankle monitor was inactive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., so that he could look for work, according to Chicago Police Cmdr. Brendan Deenihan.
“This individual chose to use his time by killing someone,” said Deenihan.
The intended target was a driver of a vehicle that ferried Aldridge to the school where she planned to register her child.

The driver was allegedly targeted because he “exchanged looks” with the two brothers and was from out of town.
The Sorrells brothers chased the driver down and fired in his direction but hit Aldridge instead, wounding her in the head and arm. Her baby was unharmed.
Investigators identified the two Sorrells after watching a surveillance video from the school and talking to a school security officer, said Deenihan.
The West and South sides of Chicago have seen gun violence skyrocket, as there was 65 homicides just this past month, the most in the month of July since 2006.
Wade took to Twitter on Saturday to express his sorrow and urge for social change.
A day prior to the murder of his cousin, Wade and his mother, Pastor Jolinda Wade, were part of a panel hosted by ESPN’s “The Undefeated” titled: “An Undefeated Conversation: Athletes, Responsibility and Violence — a panel discussion on athletes, guns, violence and law enforcement.”
