The Dallas Mavericks have just announced that they have signed 24-year-old guard Dakota Mathias. As per team policy, the details of his deal haven't been released to the public, but he's expected to get one of the team's two-way contracts.

Mathias, 6'4, gu went undrafted in 2018 after a four-year college career at Purdue. He holds the school's record for the most made 3-pointers of all-time with 250.

Mathias was then given an opportunity to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Summer League last season but really didn't impress anyone enough as he didn't even get a training camp invite from any team. So he signed with Spain’s Divina Seguros Joventut and became one of their most reliable players. He averaged 8.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 12 games for the ballclub. Unfortunately, he suffered an ankle injury that left the team with no choice but to release him.

His then played for the Los Angeles Lakers in this year's Summer League, where he put up  5.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 19.6 minutes in five games.

It is expected that Mathias will be playing most of next season in the G-League. But it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get called up, especially if he plays well. Several scouts and experts are still raving about his ability to consistently hit 3-pointers, and if he will be able to do that next season, then he might become an integral part of the team's main roster.

The Mavericks' masterplan is to surround Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis with shooters, which is why the Mathias signing makes sense. It's a low-risk, potentially high-reward deal for Dallas.
