The Dallas Mavericks pulled off one of the most shocking trades in NBA history on Sunday when they sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. And in the wake of the massive blockbuster deal, Klay Thompson had a unique comparison to this move that involves Doncic's new teammate LeBron James.
In terms of the big names involved, and the fact that this trade materialized from seemingly out of nowhere, there's no doubt that this is one of the most surprising moves in the history of the league. When comparing the shock value of the deal to another move throughout NBA history, Thompson believes it's similar to when James ditched the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat in free agency back in 2010.
“It's similar to LeBron when he went to Miami,” Thompson said after the Mavericks blowout loss to the Cavaliers on Sunday. “Obviously that was on his own accord, but still, Luka's put up some similar numbers to LeBron. He's a franchise player, and I'm sure he'll enjoy the sunshine in Cali.”
Klay Thompson on the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers:
“I wish Luka the best. It was a joy to play with him in those 22 games we were together, but we’re obviously going to welcome AD with open arms…It’s the nature of the business, obviously you have to be professional… pic.twitter.com/PjqGwnot2O

Klay Thompson forced to watch Luka Doncic, LeBron James team up in L.A.

Thompson landed with the Mavericks over the offseason in hopes of teaming up with Doncic and leading them back to the NBA Finals after they made it there last season, only to lose to the Boston Celtics in five games. Instead, the two guys in the deals Thompson mentioned here are set to team up in Los Angeles on the Lakers now, while Dallas has to find a way to incorporate Davis, their new superstar, into the fold.
It's rare that a deal of this magnitude gets made in professional sports, let alone the NBA, and it's clear that Thompson and the Mavs are shell-shocked in the aftermath of this deal. However, they still have a lot of talent at their disposal, and if Davis can make a smooth transition into their lineup, who knows, maybe this deal could end up working out better than everyone is expecting it to.
