Kristaps Porzingis did not have the Dallas Mavericks on his list of desired destinations when he asked for a trade last week, but that did not stop the New York Knicks from sending him there, nor did it seem to deter the Mavericks from acquiring him.

According to Marc Stein of The New York Times, the Mavericks are confident in their ability to sign Porzingis to a long-term contract in spite of his apparent reluctance to be dealt there in the first place.

It's easy to see why.

With Porzingis and Luka Doncic, Dallas has the chance to develop into a special team in the future, so long as Porzingis stays healthy. Also, the Mavs play in a big market that suits Porzingis, and owner Mark Cuban has always been one to go out of his way in order to make his players feel at home.

Also, Porzingis is saying all of the right things since arriving in Dallas and doesn't seem too unhappy with the result.

Reports have said that Porzingis plans to sign his qualifying offer with the Mavericks this summer, which would keep him under contract one year and bypass restricted free agency so he could become an unrestricted free agent during the summer of 2020.

The 23-year-old is not likely to play at all for the remainder of this season, as he is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last February.

Porzingis was originally selected by the Knicks with the fourth overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, but a deteriorating relationship between him and the front office resulted in him asking for a change.
