The Dallas Mavericks have put soon-to-be free agent center DeAndre Jordan as their primary target this offseason, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon.
Only three years removed from an oh-so-damn-close moment, the Mavs will revisit this scenario once again, hoping this time around he'll have no more teammates to barricade him from a deal with owner Mark Cuban and his home state of Texas.
The Mavs have been linked to other big men like DeMarcus Cousins, Julius Randle, and Clint Capela, but Jordan is their most realistic option, regardless of how good they feel about their chances to land Cousins.
“If Jordan declines the option with the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources say the Mavs plan to aggressively pursue him in free agency, which begins Sunday. The interest is mutual, according to league sources, as hard feelings from three years ago have been forgiven.”
The Mavs now have the pieces to build around with Dennis Smith Jr. growing into his role as a floor general and Harrison Barnes as the leading scorer.
Drafting Luka Doncic bodes well as a secondary playmaker and a potent source of offense. Now adding Jordan could make this season a memorable one for legend Dirk Nowitzki, as he hopes to go out on a winning note, leaving the franchise in good hands.
Nowitzki could have his $5 million team-option declined for a much team-friendly deal, which would allow Dallas to free enough salary cap space to ink Jordan to a beefy long-term deal.
