Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis was frustrated with his role at the end of last season, and there have been rumblings for a while about a frosty relationship with Luka Doncic. But now after some big changes in the offseason, the optimism about this pairing is back.

While the most obvious Mavs changes came at head coach and in the front office, Doncic says Porzingis himself has made notable improvements and is ready to play at a star level again. Via Sports Illustrated's Michael Shapiro:

“He is in way better shape this year, especially mentally,” Dončić says. “You could see him in a good mood when we were playing pickup. I think we’re in for a great year together.”

Doncic knows it's also part of his responsibility to get Porzingis involved so that he stays engaged. During the playoffs last season, Porzingis often just floated around the perimeter and became an afterthought as Doncic dominated the Mavs' offense and then wore down late in games. These two need to be on the same page not only with each other but new head coach Jason Kidd and their other teammates.

Kidd is excited about the opportunity to work with Porzingis and diversify his game so he's not just a floor spacer. The big man has had stretches where he's a dominant two-way force, but injuries and other factors have made him a bit inconsistent.

If Porzingis can stay healthy and up his game, Dallas will be a serious threat in the West.
