The Dallas Mavericks will be heading into the 2019-20 season with a plan to contend for a playoff spot. They will be fielding in a team led by reigning Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, who is expected to be 100 percent healed from his injury. Although they are not expected to win the championship, a lot of people — including executives and coaches from rival teams — are extremely optimistic about the Mavs' future.

In an interview with RealGM's Keith Smith, an anonymous coach shared his thoughts on the Doncic-Porzingis duo and emphasized that while the two rising stars still have flaws, the Mavs are very fortunate to have them as cornerstones.

“A guy who is 20 and a guy who is 24? We should all be so lucky,” the unnamed coach said. “I hear so much ‘Doncic is close to a finished product’ stuff. Who is saying that? Not anyone in the league that I know. He can get in better shape. He can improve his defense, which will come when he gets in better shape. And K.P. was just becoming an unstoppable scorer. I do think they need to be careful with how hard they push him. Not sure a guy who is that big can go 35 minutes a night for all 82. But that’s one hell of a pair to build around.”

The Mavs are not in any rush to contend for a title. They will most likely use next season to build the chemistry between Luka and KP. Making it to the postseason will already be considered a success for Dallas, and the following years will be the time for them to start building a championship-contending roster.

Finding the necessary pieces wouldn't be hard for the Mavs in the future, especially since they have two of the NBA's best young players.
