Every NBA season, we see a player break out of his shell and gain the respect and admiration of his colleagues, analysts and fans. This player either becomes an All-Star or puts on a string of great games together. For the Denver Nuggets, there's one player who is poised for a breakout season in 2021-22. It's none other than Michael Porter Jr.

One can argue that he already had his breakout in the 2020 NBA Playoffs where he played a pivotal role in the Nuggets' back-to-back 3-1 comebacks. It was surprising to see Michael Malone field MPJ 23.7 minutes per game in basketball's biggest stage. Perhaps what's more surprising was how Porter Jr. managed to remain calm and confident whenever he was on the floor. To recall, he hit a clutch 3-pointer in Game 5 of the Western Semis against the Los Angeles Clippers. Before this shot, Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic were tagged as the Nuggets' franchise stars. After that shot, Porter Jr. entered the conversation.

His playoff performance was just his first step into superstardom. Malone rightfully inserted him into the starting lineup come 2020-21 and MPJ did not disappoint. He boosted his averages to 19.0 points (from 9.3) and 7.3 rebounds (from 4.7) per game. He also raised eyebrows for shooting 44.5 percent from deep on 6.3 attempts per game. Some fans even compared his shooting prowess and size to Kevin Durant.

In his second playoff trip, Michael Porter Jr. once again proved why he is set to become a major problem for his foes. He averaged 17.4 points and shot 47.4 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from deep. It was clear that if you give MPJ the minutes, he will produce. His efforts were recognized as he placed third in the Most Improved Player voting. Unfortunately, the Nuggets' 2021 postseason campaign was cut short. It was in large part due to Jamal Murray being sidelined. They just couldn't handle the red hot Phoenix Suns without him.

Some may see this as a precedent for the Nuggets' 2021-22 NBA season. Without Murray, will the Nuggets remain one of the head honchos of the Western Conference? While the cause of concern is understandable, Nuggets fans must remain confident at the team's chances. Though they will be without Murray for a good chunk of the season, Porter will be with them all year long.

In fact, Malone would probably draw up some plays specifically designed to utilize Porter's abilities. Outside shooting is a major part of his offensive arsenal, so we may see some two-man plays with him and Jokic. MPJ has also shown off his ability to move effectively without the ball. Again, with someone like Jokic on the floor, these are easy two points. The simple fact that Porter has a deep offensive toolbox gives Malone a wide array of plays to run.

Let's not forget that MPJ just agreed to a massive five-year, $207 million max extension. This is a clear sign that the front office had seen everything they needed to see from the 23-year-old in his first three years in the league. He's the team's third star, and without a doubt, that contract will serve as extra motivation for him to reach greater heights. Averaging 23-25 points per game and 10 rebounds is feasible for Porter. An All-Star nod or even a Most Improved Player trophy would be, too.
