The Golden State Warriors were on the receiving end of a very disappointing 94-90 loss to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. After the game, Draymond Green had a few choice words for his team's performance, labeling it as “soft” and “stupid.” Needless to say, the Dubs star was very unhappy with how his team played against a struggling Magic side and how they were “punked” by their opponents throughout the match.
Green now appears to have calmed down a bit as he talked about the loss again on his podcast. The Warriors talisman started off by admitting that he actually had no idea that his team had lost three straight. According to Dray, this just isn't on his mind right now:
“The reality is at this point in the season, I could care less about whether we win or lose a game because ultimately this is about preparing yourself and getting ready for the playoffs and the stretch run,” Green said. “So I had no idea we’d lost 3 in a row. In saying that, I think — as you may have heard in my press conference after the Orlando Magic game – I think a large part of that is us getting punked.”
A more composed Draymond Green then went on to explain who he believes is most to blame for Tuesday's loss to Orlando. The former Defensive Player of the Year was more than willing to take the fall for his team:
“I said that to my teammates. I'm not afraid to say that. And what I didn’t say and what the reality is, is that falls on me. That’s my category, that’s where I excel. That's where I lead. I have to be better at that. I can't let that happen. So that falls on me.”
That's just typical of Green. He's never shy about calling out his teammates but at the same time, he's never the type to point fingers. Accountability is extremely important for Green and this notion definitely applies to him as well. Whenever he knows he's been lacking in whatever area, he never fails to man up to take the blame.
Green was also asked in his post-game press conference if he thought things would be different if Stephen Curry was around. Dray was having none of it and he has now doubled down on his comments:
Article Continues Below“No, it wouldn't be because that's not Steph Curry's duty,” Green responded. “If I failed at that currently, no matter who's on the floor, Steph Curry's not coming to make us tougher. That's not what Steph does. That's not what I'm ever going to allow Steph to do. That's not Steph's role. So, that falls on me regardless of who on the floor. You can't be outtoughed. You gotta be tough. You gotta meet the level of physicality.”
The easier route would have been to say that yes, the Warriors have been struggling partly because of the fact that they're missing their best player. Well, Draymond Green just doesn't roll like that. Once again, he turned the attention to himself by saying that it's his job to make this team tougher.
Green then provided a preview of the type of mindset he has right now entering the postseason. As he said earlier, winning games isn't the most important thing right now. After all, the Warriors have already secured their spot in the Playoffs. Grene believes that the Warriors need to focus on their physical and mental preparations for the grueling run ahead:
“The Playoffs are coming up so meeting the level of physicality is more important than anything,” he said. “Being mentally strong is more important than anything. I think that's two areas that our team has been lacking in. We need to pick it back up. We've shown that we can be good in those areas and I think it's very important that heading into mid-April, that we get that back. Like I said, that's on me. I'll make sure we get that back.”
Green just recently returned to the lineup after missing several weeks due to a lingering back injury. He seems fine now and he just wants to make sure that now that he's returned, the Warriors get back the trademark toughness they've been known to have for many years.
There's no doubt that the Dubs have one of the most talented teams out there, but at the end of the day, the same can be said for several other teams. This is exactly why the Warriors need to have an edge. Draymond Green has been there and done that and he knows exactly what his team requires right now.
