The Miami Heat’s 90-85 win over the L.A. Clippers last Saturday wasn’t just an ordinary regular-season victory in the middle of December. It also now serves as a historical bookmark for the Heat, who now has a new all-time coaching wins leader in Erik Spoelstra, who passes Pat Riley after the Clippers game with his 455th victory as the mentor of the Heat. Not bad for a former video coordinator.

Miami is having quite a stretch of late, winning four of their last five games, so Spoelstra’s coaching milestone adds a little bit more positive vibe for the 15-14 heat squad.

Against the Clippers, the Heat shot just 37.8 percent from the floor and got scored on 48 points in the paint by L.A. They were also massively rebounded by DeAndre Jordan and company, 62-46. Still, the Heat managed to eke out a win thanks in large part to their stingy defense that forced the Clippers to cough out the ball 18 times.

On his way to becoming the Heat’s all-time coaching wins leader, Spoelstra had won two NBA titles in 2012 and 2013, which are more than his predecessor’s ring count in Miami. Riley guided the Heat to their first-ever NBA championship in 2006, his fifth overall in his NBA coaching career.

Spoelstra will look to add more to his coaching wins total for Miami this Monday against the Atlanta Hawks on the road.
