Win their win against the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday night, the Utah Jazz have clinched a playoff spot for the second year in a row.

The Jazz notched their 47th victory of the season against the Lakers, with a 97-112 win. Rookie Donovan Mitchell had a monster performance. He almost had a triple-double after finishing with 28 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Joe Ingles also chipped in with 22 points and 10 assists.

They have clinched the fourth spot in the Western Conference and could either play the New Orleans Pelicans, the San Antonio Spurs, or the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.

It has been an unexpected turn of events for the Jazz this season. Critics believed that after losing their star Gordon Hayward to free agency, the Jazz would enter “rebuild” mode.

However, Mitchell, playing in his first season, had other ideas and immediately injected a winning-attitude in the squad. Mitchell leads the Jazz in scoring, logging in 20.4 points a night, along with 3.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

Apart from Mitchell, defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert has made an astounding impact since his return. After Gobert's return in January, the Jazz are 28-7.

Gobert said before that winning is the only option for the team. He doesn't believe in “tanking” and “rebuilding.” For a team to be good, they have to learn how to win. In Sam Amick's article for USA Today Sports, Gobert said:

“That's why I don't believe in tanking, all that stuff. I believe you learn how to win by winning. You don't learn how to win by losing on purpose to get a 19-year-old who you've never seen.”
