The marriage between Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers came to an abrupt and strange ending. After signing a monster contract to stay in LA and remain the face of the franchise, the Clippers subsequently dealt Griffin to the Detroit Pistons.

Clippers fans held no ill-will towards Griffin for the trade — and rightfully so. The big contract he signed was proof that he was committed to the Clippers. He didn't ask to be traded.

But now he's responding to an accusation that he took shots at Clippers fans on “The Jamie and Stoney Show” on Detroit radio station 97.1 The Ticket. Griffin said:

“And the fans from day one, this is a true sports town. They really embrace sports, and that’s not something I’ve been used to for the past nine years. It’s really nice to be in a place where fans are knowledgeable and they really are diehard fans”

It's easy to see why Clippers fans are taking this the wrong way, but Griffin took to Twitter to clarify his comments.

Griffin is clarifying that he was referring to the cities of Los Angeles and Detroit, not making a comparison between Clippers fans and Pistons fans. That's believable. Los Angeles has never been considered a great sports town. Griffin could have done a better job articulating his point, but it wasn't a slight directed at the loyal Clippers fans.

There are enough times where fans can reasonably hate a player after he leaves their favorite team, but this is certainly not one of those times.
