Los Angeles Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard has finally addressed the rumors that he misled the Los Angeles Lakers and the Toronto Raptors during free agency.
Leonard said that he took his sweet little time in coming up with a decision, adding that it was the media's fault that made it seem he did the Lakers and Raptors dirty. Speaking with Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Leonard shared his side on the massive press coverage that his impending decision received.
“I didn't lead anyone on really,” Leonard argued. “I took my time in free agency as I should, making sure that I make the best decision for myself and my family. I feel like some of the media coverage over it made it feel that way.”
To recall, every single NBA fan and team waited on Leonard's decision. However, while the Clippers, Lakers and Raptors waited, the other top free agency were slowly disappearing in the market.
When Leonard officially agreed to join the Clippers, conspiracy theories mushroomed around saying that it was all Leonard's plan of sabotaging the Lakers. However, Leonard denied those theories and pointed out that he never thought of coming up with such a scheme to play the Purple and Gold or even the Raptors.
“Whoever is telling those statements, you shouldn't believe rumors. I don't want to ever have that bad karma come back to me, having the Lakers miss out on players that they should've gotten, and vice versa with the Raptors,” Leonard added.
Leonard's words may have been the punctuation mark that ends all the rumors that have hounded him this summer. There are still some things to be ironed out, particularly the controversy involving his Uncle Dennis. But when all of that's done, then Leonard can finally concentrate on that thing he does best: play basketball and win.
