There has been a ton of excitement surrounding the Denver Broncos, who acquired star quarterback Russell Wilson in an NFL offseason blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks. Additionally, the franchise announced plans for a sale of the ownership rights amid a lengthy intrafamily squabble amongst the previous owners. Amid all this excitement, a famous name has been thrown into the ownership mix for the Broncos: Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, as reported by Sportico.

Johnson is reportedly among a group of investors, led by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Josh Harris, who are seeking to purchase the Broncos this NFL offseason. The inclusion of the Lakers legend is a big step for the league, given the recent calls for more minority owners in the NFL.

There has never been an African American owner in the NFL's 102-year history. Johnson, who was the former President of Basketball Operations for the Lakers, is a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rob Walton, the heir to Walmart, is considered the favorite in the bidding process for the Broncos. The franchise's sale is expected to exceed $4 billion, which would be the biggest in league history.

While it's not yet known how much Johnson is contributing to the group angling to purchase the Broncos, his involvement in the process is a big step forward for the NFL.
