TMZ Sports has obtained leaked audio of the farewell speech made by Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James as he bid farewell to everyone on set of the highly anticipated film, “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”
Not to worry, the speech had nothing to do with the movie's storyline, so there won't be any spoilers. If you want to hear the whole thing, you can visit the TMZ article here.
Article Continues BelowJames started off by describing how he first came across the project and how he did not have a moment's hesitation of whether he would involve himself or not:
“I'm gonna be honest completely with you guys — when I found out about the project, I was like it's ‘Space Jam'! It’s a movie that I grew up watching,” he stated. “People in the movie that I idolize. I was like absolutely, I gotta do it. There’s no way I can turn down ‘Space Jam'!”
LeBron James turned serious toward the latter part of his speech, sharing how he was able to successfully overcome the odds as a Black boy from a small town:
“I’m just a small kid from Akron, Ohio — a very small town outside of Cleveland. From a single-parent household, I’m the only child, my mother had absolutely nothing. She was walking around high school when she was 16 years old and she was pregnant with me as a high school sophomore. So I’m really not supposed to be here.
“Growing up in the inner city, as an African-American kid, there’s no way you’re supposed to f*cking make it out. And, the fact that I’m who I am as an African-American adult now with 3 kids of my own, and I made it out of the situations that I was in. This sh*t is like extra credit for me man.”
LeBron James is an incredible American success story, and his narrative is always amazing to hear regardless of whether you're learning about it for the first time or the hundredth time. Then again, he is an extremely talented basketball player and a once-in-a-generation athlete, so his story is quite unique. Nevertheless, he serves as an inspiration to many, many young kids.
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is set for its theatrical release in July 2021.
