When the Los Angeles Lakers selected Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, they had a bunch of All-Star appearances and MVP candidacies on their minds.

Ball does, too, but he is not putting that above winning titles, according to Scott Cacciola of The New York Times:

“Obviously, I want to be an All-Star,” said Ball. “I want to be M.V.P. one day. But for me, it’s all about championships. When I play the game, I play to win.”

Ball has certainly flashed tantalizing talent in his second season, exhibiting spectacular court vision and a sixth sense that all great point guards possess.

But, at the same time, there are obvious flaws.

Through 34 games this season, Ball is averaging 8.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, 30.7 percent from 3-point range and a miserable 51.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Honestly, if Ball is going to be directing the offense and facilitating for his teammates, you can deal with his lack of a consistent jumper. But his inability to make free throws is devastating, and it's not like he has been such a positive influence on his team this season, as he owns a net rating differential of minus-3.6 on the year.

The good news for Ball is that he is just 21 years old and has players like LeBron James and Rajon Rondo to learn from on the Lakers, not to mention team president Magic Johnson.

The bad news is that Los Angeles fans do not exactly have much patience, so if he doesn't get things together soon, don't be surprised if fans begin to sour on him.
