The Los Angeles Lakers have found themselves in a peculiar situation in the NBA offseason. After struggling throughout the regular season, the organization is doing everything possible to get back into playoff contention. However, the franchise is essentially at a standstill with LeBron James, which impacts Russell Westbrook's future with the club.

According to Bleacher Report, “the Lakers are stuck without a commitment from James, whose contract expires after the 2022-23 season. Competing executives and agents do not expect the team to get clarity from James ahead of the draft and free agency.” This is not ideal for LA, especially with the NBA Draft taking place later in June. If LeBron James opts to sign an extension with the team, then the front office will have a more clear path in potentially trading Russell Westbrook.

For now, “the Lakers are operating as if Russell Westbrook will be on the roster to start next season,” per Bleacher Report. However, if LeBron James decides to sign an extension, it could push the front office to seek trading the veteran point guard. To get a trade finalized the front office will likely have to acquire multiple players due to the $47.1 million deal Westbrook will acquire if he accepts his player option.
