The Los Angeles Lakers are moving hell and high water in hopes to lure a big-time free agent to L.A. to entice LeBron James to sign with them this offseason, but as the clock ticks during these two days before making a decision to opt in or out of the last year of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, it might not take that much movement after all.

According to Sean Deveney of The Sporting News, James could bolt for the Lakers even before they haul in a big name, taking the roster construction upon himself by reaching out to various free agents during this offseason.

“If L.A. is serious about luring LeBron James as a free agent when the process kicks off this weekend, the prevailing wisdom has been that the Lakers need to shake up the roster and bring in credible veteran stars quickly to show James the team can contend with him on board,” wrote Deveney. “Surely, James would not pack up and go West to play with guys more than a decade younger than him.

But league executives aren’t so sure the Lakers need to make pre-emptory moves in order to get James to come to LA. One told Sporting News he expects James to sign with the Lakers, even before the team remakes its roster. One report suggested that James has been calling fellow free agents to determine their intentions and figure out which ones might join him should he head to the Lakers.”

James is expected to take a very similar route to what he did in 2014 upon making his return to Cleveland, coming to a recently-extended Kyrie Irving and getting the front office to flip their first-overall selection, Andrew Wiggins, for a budding star in Kevin Love — assembling his very own Big Three.

“That’s the sense you get with him and his people,” the GM told Sporting News. “They’re doing enough research to suggest that he’s going to be willing to take that plunge and let the roster come together. It’s what happened in Cleveland four years ago.”

James' affinity to play the role of GM has bit him in the ass before, and it could bite him once again if he makes the wrong move by coming into a roster that would have to rid itself of many young pieces to stand a chance to land Kawhi Leonard, and could still face the possibility of having another top talent in Paul George remain with Oklahoma City.
