If the Golden State Warriors don't offer Klay Thompson a max contract, the sharpshooting guard would sit down with the Los Angeles Lakers and the L.A. Clippers.
Per Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, the Lakers are back in the running for an elite-level free agent since they have freed up some cap space:
Sources: If the Warriors don’t offer guard Klay Thompson a max $190 million deal on Sunday when free agency opens, he will listen to both LA teams, the Lakers and Clippers. Lakers back in the runnings because they now have max slot of $32 million after today’s trade.

The Lakers will be sending Moe Wagner, Isaac Bonga, and Jemerrio Jones to the Washington Wizards. On top of this, Anthony Davis has agreed to waive his $4 million trade kicker, which has given the Lakers the ability to gun for a max player worth $32 million. The view among analysts was that the Lakers would likely spread the cap space to sign a bunch of reliable role players. Now, it seems that Rob Pelinka is looking to snag a third superstar such as Klay Thompson.
The Clippers, meanwhile, have been in the free agency rumor mill since they freed up some cap space for two max players in February. On top of this, their encouraging regular season (despite not having any superstar) has raised the eyebrows of several elite players.
Reports reveal that the Warriors are trying to offer Thompson the max contract, though we have yet to find out if this deal comes into fruition. The Warriors also shared that they want to retain Kevin Durant — who is also due a max contract. If the Warriors sign both of them, then their payroll and luxury taxes could balloon up to $350 million.
