Tell us if you’ve heard or seen this one before: a big man in the NBA wants to start shooting more from deep. It’s not that all surprising to see NBA frontcourt pieces jacking up threes and Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic wants to be just like them.
Granted an interview by Vucevic, Josh Robbins of the Orland Sentinel asked the center about it to hear from him his reason for extending his range.
Article Continues Below“I think it creates lots of things for us offensively and a lot of space that we need,” Vucevic said. “But I think it’s also the way the league is going. We have to adapt. Also, I think that it fits us.”
Vucevic, in fact, has begun testing his accuracy from beyond the arc, as he went 2-for-3 on his 3-point attempts during the Magic’s comprehensive 112-89 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. It’s a preseason game, however, and with the game essentially all but over as early as the third quarter, Vucevic didn’t really feel any need to keep himself from throwing up shots he’d normally not take in the past.
Having a 3-point shot would definitely increase Vucevic’s potency on offense as well as the Magic’s. Orlando was 25th last season with 8.5 3-pointers per game and 28th with 44.0 percent clip from long distance.
Vucevic is a career 29.7 percent 3-point shooter and attempted only 76 tries from the outside last season, knocking down only 23.
