The Grizzlies have an interesting offseason. They missed the playoffs last year but made some significant signings this summer. How it would all pan out is still anyone's guess; just ask point guard Mike Conley.
When asked how he thinks his team will fare this year, Conley has this to say via the Commercial Appeal:
“This season, expectations are still try to be that playoff team, that team that comes out and really makes it tough on everybody. But it is an awkward year with so many teams getting so much better [with] different acquisitions they made in the offseason.”
Memphis gained notoriety in the league for their trademark hustle on the court which earned them the moniker “Grit-n-Grind.” Only Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol have remained from that core which featured the likes of hard-nosed players such as Zach Randolph and Tony Allen.
Article Continues BelowNow, the team will parade rookie Jaren Jackson Jr., who impressed in the Summer League, and former San Antonio Spurs forward Kyle ‘Slo-Mo’ Anderson, to complement the veterans in the lineup. Infusing young blood is the right thing moving forward for a rebuilding team like Memphis which tallied a 22-60 win-loss card last year.
The management led by head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, general manager Chris Wallace, and executive vice president of basketball operations John Hollinger is bent on turning things around and they hope the new faces can speed up the long journey back to NBA relevancy.
Can the Grizzlies usher in a new era of “Grit-n-Grind”? It's hard to say, after all, only three players from the roster are signed long-term. Even if Memphis could not replicate the success of “Grit-n-Grind” in the past, the present lineup has all the potential to create a new identity for the Grizzlies for years to come.
