Memphis Grizzlies small forward Vince Carter shut down the notion that he'd be willing to compete in this season's dunk contest.

The rumor started after a YouTube video on Oct. 17, where he said it'd be “interesting, to say the least” to participate in the dunk contest, words which of course were taken to sound like he was considering a potential return to slam glory.

“I heard about that video way after the fact,” Carter told NBA.com's Lang Whitaker at Madison Square Garden. “All of a sudden people were like, ‘You’re in the dunk contest?’ I was like, ‘Where is this coming from?’ Whatever clown that reported it, it’s like, just call the source first. Just ask me! Come to any training camp and ask me.”

According to Carter, the video was from last year, when a particular reporter asked about his vertical leap and compared it to young Andrew Wiggins.

Whitaker took a shot and asked Carter if he could replicate any of his dunks performed in the 2000 NBA Dunk Contest. He was honest and succinct in his response.

“I could probably do one, and I’d probably need a day before I’d do another. I could do some stuff, but not enough to win a dunk contest. With what these guys are doing now? Yeah, right.”

To some, that dunk contest will never be topped, so it comes as good news that he will not attempt another to compare it to, as it will likely be either a sad result or a win out of pity, which no proud NBA athlete would want.

To others, sorry but not sorry your dreams have been crushed.
