With the Miami Heat heading to D.C. for their game against the Washington Wizards on Saturday, Bam Adebayo described his fear as an African-American man amid the riots at the US Capitol.
The United States' socio-political climate was rife with anger on Wednesday. First, the police officer who shot Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin was not pressed with charges. Second, the riot of Trump supporters at the US Capitol.
For Adebayo, these two incidents have made him fear for his life even more — especially as a black man in America.

“I’m not leaving my room,” Adebayo said of the Heat’s Friday departure to Washington, per Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sentinel. “After seeing something like that, I’m not leaving my room. I’m an African American man. I’ve got to live with that. I’ve got to be cautious everywhere I go.
“You never know who I’m picking to be the deciding person to be like, ‘I’m going to ruin his life today,’ or ‘I’m going to take something away from him that he really loves.’ Like I said, being an African American man, you can tell there’s two Americas we’re living in. They don’t want us to be equal.”
The Heat big man presented a scenario wherein a mob of African-American men and women stormed the US Capitol. For him, they won't get away with anything like the rioters' act on Wednesday.
The NBA has allowed its players to use their voice and their vast platform to share their opinions on social issues. In the coming days, expect more players to share their sentiments over the US Capitol riots and beyond.
