Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks made their preseason debut against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. The Greek Freak came back with a notably different free-throw routine, which worked quite well in the first go-round. Antetokounmpo, who shot a career-low 63.3 percent from the foul line last season, converted 6-of-7 attempts from the charity stripe in the 112-102 preseason loss to the Mavs.

Asked about the change postgame, the Bucks star downplayed his new routine at the line.

Via Eric Nehm of The Athletic:

“No. There’s nothing different,” Antetokounmpo said. “I try not to think about it. Obviously, like a month and a half ago, yeah, I changed something, but now it’s in the past. I’m not thinking about this is how I shoot free throws right now. This is how I shoot the ball right now.”

Antetokounmpo has made changes to his routine in the past, so this isn't entirely a new deal for the two-time reigning NBA MVP. Veteran sniper Kyle Korver helped Giannis with his shooting stroke prior to last season. However, that didn't do much for the Bucks stud, as he shot a career low from the foul line in 2019-20.

The change in his routine features a longer shooting motion compared to the previous iterations. It certainly worked out for the most part on Day 1 for the Bucks star:

On Saturday night, Antetokounmpo brought the ball lower and closer to his body while moving his right arm out to the side, instead of tucked in near his side. The goal, as with just about any shooting motion, is to keep his elbow in line and make it easier to bring the ball straight up the side of his body with good elbow lift and follow through on the finish.

Based on Antetokounmpo's answer, it doesn't seem like he's too worried about the routine or how he goes up with the shot. All that matters is that the shots go in. We'll see if the Bucks star's steady outing from the line against Dallas is a sign of things to come.
