The Minnesota Timberwolves landed highly-coveted guard D'Angelo Russell in a deal with the Golden State Warriors before the NBA Trade Deadline.

However, with the Timberwolves' current sorry state, it seems that they'll have to wait until next season for the Karl Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell tandem to make a run for the postseason. Minny currently holds the second-worst record in the Western Conference with a dreadful 16-40 slate.

With the playoffs out of the picture this year, the Timberwolves' front office is reportedly planning to limit Russell's exposure in the team's remaining games this season.

Russell, meanwhile, does not seem to mind sitting out games if the Timberwolves ask him to do so.

“Going into the summer healthy is a major advantage,” Russell said, per Chris Hine of Star Tribune.  “For players in our league not having to do rehab, you can gain the edge and work on things you knew you need to work on during the season but you didn’t get the time to. I agree with it. I think it’s smart and something I’m going to take advantage of.”

D'Angelo Russell, 24, already missed several games for the Dubs this season due to numerous injuries. With the Timberwolves including him in their long-term plan moving forward, it might be wise to sit him out to avoid any chances of potential injuries.

Russell added that he has faith in the Timberwolves’ medical and performance staffs and their recommendations for him.

“I trust what they do,” he said. “Performance team is great here. Performance team is running professional sports nowadays. They’re way more educated than I am in that aspect.”

Russell is averaging 23.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.0 steal in four appearances for the Wolves this season. He knows he needs to look ahead to next fall and think about how he can make a strong impression in the 2020-21 NBA season.
