After finally agreeing to an extension deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Karl-Anthony Towns has pretty much single-handedly lifted the spirits of the entire city of Minnesota. This comes at a much needed time, with the Timberwolves in the midst of disarray following the saga involving want-away star Jimmy Butler.

Speaking to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, Towns tried to shed light on why agreeing to a deal with his team took longer than most had anticipated.

“It took a lot longer than I expected, but at the end of the day it was all about getting everything perfect and the understanding was the same,” Towns said. “In talking to each other about the commitment to winning, that was the biggest thing, and having that commitment to each other.”

While Towns did not go into the details about the reasons behind the drawn out negotiations, he pointed out that the most important thing is that it is over now, and that both parties can finally move forward in unison.

“It’s not about how ugly and pretty the W is, it’s about getting the win,” Towns said of the long and winding process toward his extension. “At the end of the day, both sides got what they wanted. We left that table extremely happy with the possibilities and the commitment made to each other.”

With Towns agreeing to an extension just days after Butler's trade request, it is hard to rule out the possibility that one thing led to the other. Whatever the case may be, the Timberwolves have made their choice — Towns is unquestionably their centerpiece for the future.
