Sports are often a useful avenue to bring people together. Never is that more so the case than with the Olympics.

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant will play for Team USA in Rio starting in a few weeks. Both KD and his teammates recognize the influence they have being on this team, and they want to take advantage of that platform.

Durant, from Marcus Thompson of the Mercury News:

“We're going through a tough time right now, in the country and also around the world, and we can provide that sense of togetherness and unity,” new Warriors star Kevin Durant said. “Obviously, we definitely want to win a gold medal. That's the most important thing for us as basketball players. But when we look at the big picture of things, we want people to see how much we love each other, see how much we love being around each other. … We want that united feel when you watch us play. I think having these great group of guys together, you'll see that.”

A lot of people have come out with critical comments on Durant for his decision to join the Warriors, but these words here are something that can be respected apart from that.

Since Mike Krzyzewski took over as the head coach for Team USA basketball, the Americans have only lost once. Coach K has been able to create a culture where the biggest stars in the NBA buy in to the team concept, perhaps better than they ever have. Sacrifice is at the forefront of this, as well as playing for one another.

It's good to see athletes like KD recognize the real problems in the world and attempt to help in any way that they can.
