Former Charlotte Hornet and Memphis Grizzly, P.J. Hairston is retiring from basketball according to his Instagram page. Hairston posted a heartfelt message that makes his retirement from the game of basketball completely clear.

The former first-round pick hasn't played in the NBA since the 2015-16 season and it's unlikely that there was any interest in Hairston around the league.

Hairston's NBA career never panned out. He only played in 111 games across the span of two seasons. He has career averages of 6.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. Although his numbers don't indicate a whole lot of success, Hairston seems at peace with his decision to walk away from the game.

To be fair, getting drafted and playing any amount of games is an incredible accomplishment that shouldn't be overlooked. Hairston had the chance to play against the greatest players in the world and there is no understating that. In fact, his Instagram features Hairston playing defense on LeBron James. Sure, he's hacking James and likely sending him to the line, but he played against the greats all the same.

Hairston makes no indication of what's coming next for him. The former North Carolina Tar Heel is stepping away from the game in terms of playing, but he also mentions that he will remain close to the game. Hairston writes:

“My passion for the game will always be there and I will forever stick around the game of basketball, I just feel that health is my best choice right now and being healthy is way too important.”

So congratulations to Hairston on a successful NBA career despite what the critics may say. Enjoy your retirement.
