Several people have called for teams to give Carmelo Anthony one last chance — a farewell season — including Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard. However, for ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Melo does not deserve to be given that kind of treatment.
Stephen A.'s main argument as to why Melo doesn't deserve a farewell tour is simple: he's not a champion. He's hasn't even make it to the NBA Finals at least once in his career. As the veteran sportscaster and host noted, guys like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki were given special treatment because they were able to lead their teams to an NBA title.

It is unclear if Melo will have an opportunity to do that, given the fact that he hasn't secured an NBA contract up to this point. He also ruled out the idea of playing overseas, which means that right now, it's all or nothing for him.
Anthony's ego is one of his biggest problems. His reluctance to accept a reserve role is reportedly the main reason why teams are moving away from him. If Melo can change this narrative within the next couple of months, then he might just find himself back in the NBA.
