Team USA has managed to keep its longtime spot as the best team in the world in the updated FIBA rankings despite a disappointing seventh-place finish in the recent 2019 World Cup, according to The Associated Press.

The Americans lost to France in the quarterfinals and then Serbia in the consolation bracket, only salvaging a win over Poland to nab the seventh spot in the competition.

The U.S. has held the top spot since winning the 2010 World Cup — nine years and counting. Eventual World Cup champion Spain remained at No. 2. Australia, who gave Spain a scare in a double-overtime frenzy, leapfrogged eight spots to notch a No. 3 ranking. World Cup finalist Argentina rose one spot to No. 4, while France, the bronze medalists, fell off to No. 5.

The FIBA rankings take in account the results from the past eight years, which has allowed Team USA to reap the goods from the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medals, as well as the 2014 World Cup title.

In the eyes of the rankings, a seventh-place finish is merely a small blemish on an otherwise pristine record of dominance through the bulk of this decade, something the U.S. will look to continue during the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Players like Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, and Draymond Green have already offered their services and availability for the upcoming tournament, hoping to wear gold around their neck at the most visible worldwide stage of them all.
