It has been five weeks since D'Angelo Russell went under the knife after suffering a knee injury, putting an abrupt, but temporary, halt to his career season.

The Brooklyn Nets' prized acquisition of the summer was turning up excellent numbers prior to being hurt. Through 12 games, Russell was averaging 20.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists to go along with a steal per game. He was on his way to realizing the potential that the Los Angeles Lakers initially saw in him when he got selected second overall in the 2015 draft.

After a surprisingly decent start to their season, the Nets are now mired in a four-game losing streak — a season-worst. Someone with the talent of Russell could definitely be useful right now, but general manager Sean Marks isn't giving away false hopes on fans.

“The plan definitely is to see D’Angelo again. I wouldn’t tell you when exactly but hopefully it’s sooner rather than later. He’s progressing well,” Marks said in an article by Brian Lewis for the New York Post. “He’s five weeks post-op now. I think the timeline was between seven, eight weeks depending on how things go. So we’re still a couple of weeks away.”

“I’d hate to put an exact date on it. Depending on how he feels, we’re going day-to-day,” Marks said. “I’d assume he’s still probably a week-and-a-half or two weeks away from where he feels comfortable out there and be able to play at the pace in which coach Kenny [Atkinson] and his staff want to play at.”

The Nets, under head coach Kenny Atkinson, have finally carved an identity. Brooklyn is now priding itself in playing a high-octane offense that perfectly suits D'Angelo Russell's capability. He has thrived in his new situation and soon enough, he'll finally pick up where he left off.
