On Wednesday night, New Orleans Pelicans‘ forward Anthony Davis caused quite a stir with his performance in their season opener. He showed that he is completely healthy once again after suffering injuries last year and this offseason, as he had a career game with one of the best stat lines in history with 50 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, seven steals and four blocks.

But even with his monster game, his team still lost to the Denver Nuggets, 105-100. When asked how he felt about his his performance, Davis downplayed it and made it clear that his focus was on winning.

Davis also gave his thoughts on what he thinks he needs to do every game to help his team earn a victory, and it doesn't paint a very positive picture of his teammates. Per Zito Madu of SB Nation:

“I'm going to have to — probably not 50 every night — but try to get somewhere along those lines every game to give ourselves a chance.”

That may take its toll on the 23-year-old especially with the length of the season, and should they make it to the playoffs, he may not have enough left in the tank if he plans to produce close to his numbers from Wednesday night.

What the Pelicans need to do is find a way for their bench to provide a lift for their starters. The starting five contributed 79 out of the total points they made. With only 21 off the bench, head coach Alvin Gentry may want to rethink his rotation and run more plays for specific players of his second unit.

The good news for the Pelicans is it's still very early in the season. They have a lot of time to correct their mistakes and get back on track with some wins.

They'll next have a chance to bounce back from their opening night loss when they host the Golden State Warriors on Friday.
