New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team, which will keep him in the Big Easy until the 2020-21 season, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Gentry managed to more than just salvage this season after an unforeseen injury to DeMarcus Cousins that kept him out from the latter part of the 2017-18 season, but also overachieved — garnering the sixth seed in the West and a sweep of the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round.

Pelicans general manager Dell Demps had previously exercised a team option for the 2018-19 season prior to the team's first-round sweep of the Blazers, before New Orleans was knocked out of the second round by the Golden State Warriors.

Following two seasons of missing out on the playoffs, the Pelicans went an impressive 48-34 this season, surpassing their 2016-17 win total by 14.

Signing Gentry to a long-term deal will create some much-needed stability for the team, but the franchise still has a lot of question marks to address over the offseason, including Cousins' impending extension, and the future fo players like Rajon Rondo, Nikola Mirotic, and Ian Clark.

The 63-year-old Gentry has proved charismatic and likable to his player, a great cog to secure early on to provide a sense of continuity for those still waiting for a response on their future.
