One of the biggest factors in making a contender is building a winning culture within the organization. Just look at Saturday night's thriller between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics, for example.

The New York Knicks, however, do not have that culture right now. Not even close.

However, head coach David Fizdale says that the lumps the Knicks are taking now is all part of the process, citing the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets as teams who were not good for an extended period of time and are now winning games:

“This league is not going to let you walk in here as a young team and just think you're going to come out and win,” Fizdale told reporters, via Ian Begley of ESPN.com. “I think that's the misconception. . .Most winning cultures start with getting your butt kicked first.”

Fizdale makes a good point.

You were remiss if you thought the Knicks were actually going to come out and contend for a playoff spot this season, especially with Kristaps Porzingis sidelined with a torn ACL.

New York has a plethora of young, talented players such as Kevin Knox, Allonzo Trier, Mitchell Robinson and Frank Ntilikina to go along with Porzingis and will have ample cap space this summer. Plus, the Knicks have all of their draft picks for once.

Fizdale's group may be 10-37 right now, and yes, the Knicks may have lost 16 of their last 17 games, but in a couple of years, New York may actually be a team to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.
