ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski expressed some hope for the New York Knicks in the next offseason, giving his vote of confidence to this revamped front office, which has acted much more diligently than others in the past.
Woj believes the Knicks have done the right thing by clearing cap space, setting the stage for a potential signing in the summer of 2019.
“I think the Knicks will get somebody next year,” Wojnarowski said on his podcast, The Woj Pod. “I think the Knicks have put themselves in a position… I think they get a real player, I don’t know which one it is, but I think they are in position to potentially get a guy.”
That “guy” could potentially be Tri-State area native Kyrie Irving or a potentially fleeting Jimmy Butler, who have both been linked to The Big Apple over the course of this offseason.
Irving recently turned down an extension with the Boston Celtics, noting it wouldn't make much sense for his wallet, as he could make up to $80 million more next summer over a max deal.
Butler has been irked by his younger teammates' lack of determination and focus when it comes to winning basketball game, a thorn on his side as one of the NBA's fiercest competitors.
If the Knicks play their cards right, they could create even more cap space by using the stretch provision, dumping estranged center Joakim Noah and ridding the franchise of its biggest financial burden.
New York will be competing with its in-state rival, the Brooklyn Nets, who currently sport the most cap space available going into next summer.
