The New York Knicks haven’t been a serious title contender for several years now. The last time they made the playoffs was in 2013, when Carmelo Anthony was still the man in Gotham. The playoff drought is likely to continue into the next season for the Knicks, but the 2019 free agency period offers New York a lot of tasty free agents they could go after.
In a recent episode of The Woj Podcast, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN expressed his belief that the Knicks are going to be a major player in the free agent market next summer (h/t Sagar Trika of Blazers Edge).
Article Continues BelowWoj: “I think the Knicks will get somebody next year. I think the Knicks have put themselves in a position where — I think there's going to be enough movement. … I think they get a real — I don't know which one it is, but I think they're in position to potentially get a guy.”
It’s not a secret that New York is keeping an eye on Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving, who can leave Beantown in 2019 by opting out of the final year of his current deal. Irving aside, the Knicks might have also circled the names of Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, and Klay Thompson, who are among the batch of players bound for free agency next year.
The Knicks have the financial muscle to flex by that time, with only $70.2 million in committed money to their payroll for the 2019-20 season, though, that does not include a possible contract extension for Kristaps Porzingis.
In any case, the Knicks are a team to watch out for in the summer of 2019.
