The Orlando Magic didn't wait to get the fireworks going in the 2022 NBA Draft, drafting Paolo Banchero with the first overall pick. While Banchero was considered one of the top-three selections in this class, many reports indicated that Orlando at the other two players. Clearly, though, that was a smokescreen.
Many fans were surprised at the Magic's selection. Apparently, Banchero himself was also surprised with the news. The Duke product revealed that he didn't know he was going to be picked at one until Adam Silver announced the pick on live TV. (via ClutchPoints)
“I didn’t find out that I was actually getting picked until about 20 seconds before the Commissioner came on the stage. I can't believe it. I'm ready.”

Banchero spearheads a loaded 2022 NBA Draft class filled to the brim with top-tier talent. No one would've faulted the Magic if they selected either Chet Holmgren or Jabari Smith with the first-overall pick. Clearly, though, they liked what they saw from Banchero (even if he didn't have a formal workout with the team).
Banchero joins a Magic team full of up-and-coming talent on their roster. With names such as Wendell Carter Jr, Cole Anthony, Jalen Suggs, and Franz Wagner, the team is on the upswing moving forward. Banchero will immediately make an impact as a talented scorer who has the size and speed to compete at the NBA level.
Will this be enough to push the Magic over the hump? The team has struggled for a long time even before this year's draft. If Banchero lives up to his potential and the other young guns take a big step forward, this team could be a surprise playoff/Play-In contender in the 2022-23 season.
