Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks were lit up like nobody's business against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night, 129-109.
While the score was indeed lopsided, it didn't seem all too crazy at first glance. But a closer look at the box score reveals some rather eye-popping numbers.
The Suns shot an absurd 49-for-76, registering at a scorching hot 64.5% from the field. They also made more than half of their three-point attempts, going 13-for-25 which was good for 52.0% from beyond the arc.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, that output was the second worst allowed true shooting percentage by an NBA defense in the history of the playoffs. The only team that gave up an even worse result? Luka Doncic and the Mavs two seasons ago in the NBA Bubble against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Article Continues BelowSuns had 75.7% true shooting percentage, the second highest all-time in the playoffs, per @ESPNStatsInfo.
The highest: Clippers at 77.8% in Game 5 of the 2020 first round vs. Mavericks.

One way the Mavs were exposed was by the Suns' deliberate attempt to hunt for Luka Doncic as the on-ball defender. They would run him through screens and target the offensive player with Doncic on him in order to go at him one-on-one.

Luka Doncic is by no means the best defender in the NBA, but he's also not the absolute worst. However, when you carry an offensive load like he does for the Mavs, it's tough to exert as much energy on the defensive end as well.
