While MLB players like Manny Machado and Bryce Harper still remain unsigned in professional baseball's free-agent market, NBA players are living large and are determining their own fates.

After a week in which we saw New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis ask for a trade and New York Knicks young big man Kristaps Porzingis demand one himself, resulting in a trade to the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker said that NBA players have their futures in their hands:

“It’s to the point now where the players are figuring out you have more power than you thought you had back in the day,” said Booker, according to Gina Mizell of The Athletic. “They’re controlling their future.”

Booker, who signed a massive contract extension to remain with the Suns this past summer, also said that this past week was “like a reality TV show.”

Let's also remember that earlier this season, Jimmy Butler forced his way out of Minnesota and ended up getting dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers. And, of course, over the summer, Kawhi Leonard asked the San Antonio Spurs for a trade and was moved to the Toronto Raptors.

Going back even further to the summer of 2017, Kyrie Irving expressed his displeasure in Cleveland, and the Cavaliers obliged by sending him to the Boston Celtics.

More and more, players are dictating their futures in this league, and NBA organizations—particularly ones in smaller markets—are powerless to stop it.

The days of players spending their entire NBA careers with one franchise seem to be drawing to a close.
